He comes home later than the other soldiers do, and he misses the welcome greetings of his hometown people. He tries to tell his war story to people but he find out no one is interested to listen to him. Krebs decides to lie about his warââ¬â¢s story and his experiences, to make his family and his hometown people interested to listenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He wanted to live along without consequences`` (Hemingway252). He thinks living alone is more peaceful and he cannot tolerate the family relationshipââ¬â¢s challenges and make them satisfy. He actually suffers of posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) that causes difficulty for transitioning to the normal life as experts mention that ``empirical research findings clearly indicate that veteransââ¬â¢ PTSD foll owing exposure to combat violence affects veteransââ¬â¢ familial relationships and the psychological adjustment of family members`` (Galovski and Lyons 2004). Therefore, soldiers that engage with violence and observe the harshness in the war apparently hurt physically, mentally and emotionally. Their vulnerability makes them unable to adjust with the normal life and in relating with their family members. For that reason, Harold Krebs also feels these challenges and troubles in his family. Therefore his disturb emotions and mental health affect his connection and communication with his family as he makes his mother to cry when she asks him a question that `` donââ¬â¢t you love your mother dear boy? No Krebs said``. ``I do not love anybody`` (Hemingway256). He feels so depress emotionally that cannot love anybody even his mother. Concept of Reporting Entities Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Concept of Reporting Entities. Answer: Concept of Reporting Entities The concept of reporting entities is covered Statement of Accounting concepts (SAC 1). Para 40 of SAC 1 defines the term reporting entities as any entity including an economic entity for which it can be assumed that users of financial statements exists which are dependent on the general financial reporting standard for making resource allocation decisions. The concept of reporting entities states that entities should prepare general purpose financial statements. The concept includes legal entity concept which are included in the legislation of private sectors and also includes a broad concept which deals with accountability (Palmer, 2013). The concept of reporting entity is closely associated with information needs of stakeholders and the nature of the general purpose of financial reports. In addition to this the concept is used in identifying reporting entities with consideration to the stakeholders who make their decisions on the basis of financial statements. General Purpose Financial Reports (GPFRs) GPFRs are annual reports which are prepared by the reporting entities on the basis of which users make decisions about resource allocations. The reports should be prepared in accordance with the statement of accounting policies and accounting standards which are issued (Henderson et al., 2015). GPFRs are the basis on which decisions are based for the investment decisions of the shareholders of the entities. Factors which decides a Reporting Entity The three factors which determine whether a reporting entity exist or not are given below: Reporting entities depends on the extent of ownership and also on the separation between management and owners or members of the company having an economic interest which is stated in para 20 of SAC 1 (Potter, Ravlic Wright, 2013). As per para 21, the economic or political importance of an entity on the welfare of the external parties is major consideration which determine the reporting entities. The financial characteristics of the entity such as size, debt taken from external parties also determine whether an entity is a reporting entity. Fundamental Characteristic of Useful Financial Information Financial Information should be useful so that the users of the financial accounts are able to take decisions on the basis of such information. The fundamental characteristics which should be present in an useful financial information are the principle of relevance and faithful representation. Financial Information which are relevant in nature are capable of making differences in users decisions. Such financial information have predictive and confirmative values which gives the users to ability to forecast as well as gives feedback for previous forecasts (Schaltegger Burritt, 2017). Financial information are basically a summation of numerical data and numbers. Therefore, in order to be useful to the users of the financial reports, the information should be faithfully represented. The information should be complete, neutral and free from errors. Moreover, the financial information should be such that all the information are depicted clearly with all explanations and assumptions. Thus, it is clear that a financial information should be both relevant and faithfully represented so that such information are useful to the users. Enhancing Characteristics of Useful Financial Information The enhancing features of useful financial statement are comparability, verifiability, timeliness and understandability. If financial information which can be compared with other entities financial information the such factors can be considered to be an enhancing factor. Comparability is a characteristic which allows the users to compare financial reports of two similar or different entities and identify similarities or differences in the same (?ihk et al., 2013). The comparison maybe been between two items or even more. Verifiability is the principle which convinces the users of the financial reports that the information provided are faithfully represented. In other words, various individuals can access such information, draw conclusions and consent that the information are faithfully represented. It is not necessary that the conclusion drawn be the same for every individual (Yip Young, 2012). The principle of Timeliness states that the company should provide all significant inform ation to the stakeholders in a timely manner so that immediate decisions can be taken. The financial information should be such that they are clearly understandable by the users of financial reports. This can be done by properly classifying, summarizing and presenting information clearly in the financial reports. Therefore, from the above explanation it is clear that the enhanced factors are to be maximized to the extent possible to get quality financial information. Financial Information Characteristics Examples Relevance An information about the net profit margin of the entity which is a relevant financial indicator. Faithful Information The information which related to the total revenue generated by the entity during a particular year. Comparability Measuring financial performance between two companies for example Apple Inc and Samsung Verifiability Verifying is useful in valuation of inventory which can be done by applying LIFO method or weighted average cost method as per the preference of the company. Timeliness Financial Information relating to 2017 will be different from those relating to 2018 Understandability The information must be understood by the users in the same sense as intended. Such as notes to accounts are given for the clarity of users. References ?ihk, M., Demirg?-Kunt, A., Feyen, E., Levine, R. (2013).Financial development in 205 economies, 1960 to 2010(No. w18946). Turning Points in the History of the Middle East
Introduction The major turning points in the history of the Middle East can be divided into three main time periods. During the 1980s and 1990s, the history of the Middle East was shaped by three main events namely the Gulf War, the Palestinian rebellion, and the meltdown of the U.S.S R (Turning Points 114).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Turning Points in the History of the Middle East specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The second time period occurred during the first half of the new millennium. The events that had great significance on the history of Middle East included the September 11 attack, a second Gulf War, and a Palestinian rebellion (Turning Points 114). The third time period covers the years that followed the second half of the new millennium. Events that occurred during that period include Americaââ¬â¢s plan to depart from Iraq, the Arab spring, and squabbles between Israel and terror groups in the region. These events had significant implications on the economic, social, and political stability of the Middle East. Their effects market critical turning points in the modern history of Middle East. 1980s and 1990s The collapse of the U.S.S.R was a critical turning point in the history of the Middle East because it heralded a new system of political and economic ideology, alignment, and population. The position of the Soviet Union as a superpower was beneficial to countries such as Iraq, Syria, and South Yemen because of the military and financial assistance the received (Turning Points 115). However, its collapse meant that the support was withdrawn and the beneficiaries had to find other benefactors. The event would instigate the emigration of Jews from the region into Israel and a subsequent increase in its population that presented numerous social, economic, and financial challenges. Muslim countries were compelled to create new alliances with Western nations. The invasion o f Kuwait by Iraq in 1990 initiated the involvement of the United States in the Gulf War. The U.S. joined forces with other nations to help liberate Kuwait from the tight grip of Iraq (Turning Points 115). As a result, the military and economic infrastructure of Iraqi were adversely affected. Jordan struggled with helping Palestinian refugees who had been expelled from Kuwait for siding with Saddam Hussein. The financial aid that was coming from Western and Gulf countries was lost and Jordan had to forge new alliances. Egyptians were expelled from Iraq, Yemeni workers were expelled from Saudi Arabia, and Syria gained more control over Lebanon (Turning Points 114).Advertising Looking for essay on history? For instance, enmity between the United States and Iraq dates back to this period after the U.S. helped Kuwait defeat Iraq in the war. The Iraq-Kuwait war introduced enmity in the Arab world because it was the first time two Arab nations turned against each other. The war also led to creation of alliances between Arab and Western countries. For instance, the United States, United Kingdom, and France joined the war and since then, they have been involved in the politics of the Middle East. They use their economic superiority to push their agenda and influence economic policies. The collapse of the U.S.S.R. created a power vacuum in the Middle East that heralded the geopolitical and ideological contentions that took place in the 1990s. The rivalries aimed to fill the power vacuum and create a new model that would regulate the political and economic endeavors of the region. They set a stage for the involvement of regional and international players such as the United States, France, Russia, and Britain. Early 2000s The September 11, 2001 attack is one of the e vents that defined the modern history of the Middle East. 19 militants allied to the terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and launched attack against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (Turning Points 116). The attacks caused massive destruction and demise of more than 3,000 people. The attacks prompted the U.S. to develop stringent initiatives against terrorism. Reasons for the attack included Americaââ¬â¢s participation in the Persian Gulf War, presence of its military personnel in the Middle East, and its support of certain regimes (Turning Points 116). As a result of the attack, the U.S. waged war on Iraq as a way of crippling Al-Qaeda and as a result the regime of Saddam Hussein was brought down. During the same period, another war broke in the region after Palestinian militants attacked Israeli citizens. In retaliation, Israeli military fought back and occupied all regions that were under the control of Palestine in the West Bank. The economic infrastructur e of Palestine was destroyed and many civilians were killed. Continued attacks from Palestine compelled Israel to fight back. The political calamities that ensued form the war led to political dispensations in both countries in 2003 (Turning Points 116)This war was a turning point because the peace that both countries had enjoyed for many years was gone and they went back to attacking each other.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Turning Points in the History of the Middle East specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Iraqis noncompliance with United Nationsââ¬â¢ resolutions led to an attack by the United States, Britain, and other nations. On the other hand, Iran was slapped with economic sanctions for failing to cooperate with international inspectors of nuclear weapons (Turning Points 117). The September 11 attacks, war against Iraq, and political crises in Afghanistan caused enmity between the United States and Gul f states because of the need to fill the power vacuum and address the United Statesââ¬â¢ initiative to fight radical Islam and terrorist groups in the region. Many states were angered by the continued presence of U.S. military personnel in the Middle East. The Arab spring heralded a new era of ideological and political dispensation in the Middle East. It brought about geopolitical changes that showed that the ideologies of Arab countries as well as political balance are directly related to the power wielded by individual states. Globalization, terrorism, nationalism, Arab spring, Kuwait crisis, and the peace process Globalization is also another factor that has had great influence in the history of the Middle East. This phenomenon originated from the western countries and most people in this region consider it more of a threat to their culture and value system than an opportunity to broaden their customs and attitudes towards various aspects in life (Turning Points 117). The Midd le East constitutes a lot of conservative cultures that have over the years struggled to deal with the impact of globalization. At the time when the western ideologies were being introduced in the Middle East, the region was very unstable. This led to the region losing its control over various things, thus resulting in an intense struggle to fight globalization. Research has established that the effect of globalization in the Middle East is responsible for poor democratization of various societies, as well as the growth of the ideologies behind Islamic fundamentalism and extremist groups (Turning Points 115). For example, the continued pressure from the U.S. in their bid to fight terrorism, as well as promote democracy and economic liberalization has created a lot of unrest across the Middle East.Advertising Looking for essay on history? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is the kind of pressure that led to the emergence of the Arab spring in 2011, a phenomenon that sought to stimulate changes in the style of governance used across various Arabic countries. This is one of the recent developments that have left a huge mark on the history of the region because the protests resulted in change of a number of regimes that had blocked numerous efforts to embrace democracy. Currently, the Middle East is experiencing steady growth towards full democracy characterized by free and fair electoral processes, as well as promotion of human rights (Turning Points 117). One of the notable developments following the Arab spring is an initiative called rethinking political Islam that focuses on changing the global perception about Islamist movements through public debates. Reports indicate that the Kuwait crisis is also a prominent phenomenon that has shaped the history of the Middle East. The crisis also involved Iraq and the United Arab Emirates who were tangle d in a debt cancellation battle over oil exports. This crisis played a major role in the destabilization of the Middle East because countries involved started losing trust in each other. Over the period of seven months in which the crisis lasted, a lot of economic and political ties were destroyed, thus resulting in numerous challenges that altered the development efforts that were already in place across the region. Analysts argue that the greatest impacts of the crisis were felt with regard to the slow development of nationalism, as well as disregard for the peace process and the possible effects that the people would suffer due to the looming threat of terrorism (Turning Points 117). Most people in the Middle East have a strong love for their countries and have the willingness to sacrifice for it. However, this doctrine that oneââ¬â¢s national culture and interests are superior to any other has contributed to the prolonged conflicts that have been a characteristic feature in t he history of the Middle East. Over the years, the Middle East has been dogged by great rivalries between its members due to accusations and counteraccusation with regard to the establishment of a reliable peace process. This challenge has been necessitated by the global challenge of terrorism, which has seen countries such as the U.S. targeting countries in the Middle East because they believe they harbor the most dangerous terror groups (Turning Points 114). Obamaââ¬â¢s election The election of Obama was a defining moment because he promised to remove his military personnel from Iraq (Turning Points 117). The process began with military withdrawal from urban areas with promises of complete departure thereafter. In addition, Obamaââ¬â¢s administration promised to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Obamaââ¬â¢s promises meant that Iraqi authorities had to resolve certain economic and political issues that had existed for a long time. An election was conducted in 2010 and led to the creation of a coalition government (Turning Points 117). A new U.S. military policy also initiated elections in Iran in 2009. The elections were characterized by massive protests and clashes because of fraud claims. The situation was worsened by international pressure and criticisms against their nuclear weapons program. Iranââ¬â¢s failure to collaborate with inspectors led to U.N. sanctions that had severe economic and social implications. At the same time, clashes between Israel and Palestine were ongoing. Israel attacked Gaza and destroyed much of its infrastructure and blocked the transport of goods into the country (Turning Points 117). These events caused a humanitarian crisis that led to international criticisms against Israel. Israel loosened its stand after several instances of international protests from various countries. However, they carried on the blockade of construction materials because they did not want the reconstruction of destroyed inf rastructure (Turning Points 117). Currently, there is great rivalry between regional actors and international acts. There is Iran, Turkey, Israel, and Audi Arabia on one side and the U.S., China, Russia, and the U.K. on the other. These rivalries are aimed at defining the geopolitical and ideological systems of the Middle East. A good example of the effect of these rivalries is the severity of the Syrian crisis and the involvement of both regional and international actors. Conclusion The modern history of the Middle East has been shaped by several events that have taken place over the years. The Gulf War, the Palestinian rebellion, the collapse of the U.S.S.R, the Iraq invasion of Kuwait, the September 11 attacks, the Arab spring, and the Israeli attack on Palestine. These events are turning points that are responsible for the geopolitical and ideological state of the Middle East. Formation of alliances between countries, shifts in power balance, political transitions, and regional rivalries are examples of the aftermath effects of the aforementioned events. These events have shaped the political and ideological systems of the Middle East in a significant way. For instance, the current Syrian crisis is an example of the effects of rivalry between international and regional actors. Free Essays on Things They Carried Tim Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s The Things They Carried is a tale that deals not only with the risk of war, but also with the emotional effects it has on the young soldiers. Lt. Jimmy Cross is the designated leader. All of the men in the troop carried various items with them, both physically and emotionally. After the death of one of his soldiers, Cross is forced to reexamine his actions and realize the mistakes he has made. Although this man cares for his men, he does not fulfill his responsibilities. Throughout the story, it became clear to me that Lt. Jimmy Cross will not be able to forget about Martha, and that he is not an effective military leader. The things that Lt. Cross carries are different than the rest of the men. He carries memories and mementos of Martha, and these things fascinate him. ââ¬Å"Lieutenant Cross carries two photographs of Marthaâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Brien 420). These pictures control his mind. The author says that ââ¬Å"Cross often wondered who had taken the picture, because he knew she had boyfriends, because he loved her so much, and because he could see the shadow of the picture taker spreading out against the brick wallâ⬠(420). The pictures and small gifts from Martha are all that Jimmy can think about, they distract him from his responsibility of protecting his men. It took the tragic death of Lavender to make him realize that he had not fulfilled his duties. ââ¬Å"Lavender was dead. You couldnââ¬â¢t burn the blameâ⬠(430). Instead, he burns the photos of Martha. He turns her letters and pictures into a pile of ashes. He was hoping to find forgiveness form his guilt, but none was found. Even after this action that makes me believe that Cross is leaving Martha behind, he ââ¬Å"saw Marthaââ¬â¢s gray eyes gazing back at himâ⬠(430). He will never be able to forget about his obsession with the young woman. He will live the rest of his military career in guilt for his carelessness which led to the death of one of his men. As a conclusion unf... Free Essays on Things They Carried One major concern of the Americans during World War I was the communist influence. There was a group of men known as the ââ¬Å"Hollywood Ten.â⬠They were put on trial in front of the House Committee of Un-American Activities to review the effects of Communism in America. This group consisted of writers and producers that were called to testify whether or not they were members of the growing Communist party. Due to the refusal to testify these men were put in jail and blacklisted. There were many men that were a part of the ââ¬Å"Hollywood Ten.â⬠A few are Alvah Bessie, Lester Cole, John Howard Lawson and more, including Dalton Trumbo. Many of these men after being blacklisted and not being able to find employment continued on to literary works. Before Trumbo was involved in the ââ¬Å"Hollywood Ten,â⬠he was a writer. Dalton Trumbo was born on December 9, 1905 in Montrose, Colorado. After high school he went on to the University of California and Southern California, after attending the Universi! ty of Colorado for one year. After the death of his father, Dalton assumed responsibility to support the family, and he moved to California. Dalton wrote films for Vanity Fair and Hollywood Spectacular. While working for Hollywood Spectacular he wrote his first novel, Eclipse in 1935. Then following this he was hired by Warner Brothers as a screenwriter. Dalton then wrote twenty-five screenplays in the next six years. One of them being ââ¬Å"Kitty Foyle,â⬠a story about a white-collar girl and her troubled love life. This won an Oscar nomination. Dalton Trumbo was fired from his work at Metro-Goldwyn Mayer in 1950. It was after that that he completed some of his best scripts. He had found a man by the name of Ian McLellan Hunter who published his work for him. Hunter ended up taking all of the credit for Daltonââ¬â¢s work of Roman Holiday. Dalton was suffering from cut-rate prices and needed to move to Mexico before the government found out his real id...

The Hybrid Status of Immigrants Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Hybrid Status of Immigrants - Essay Example When a person happens to live in another community, which has different characteristics than the one he or she is born into, the individual becomes forced to accept some traits of that community and thus assumes a mixed personality. Immigrants, who migrate from their nation of origin to another country in the pursuit of education, job opportunities or business purposes, hence will become hybrids as they latently possess the characteristics of their original culture and absorb some aspects of the new culture. While this transformation has its rewards, it plunges them into a state of belonging neither here nor there and forces them to live between two cultures and worlds. The essays, ââ¬Å"Mother Tongue,â⬠by Amy Tan and, ââ¬Å"To the Border,â⬠by Richard Rodriguez, deftly illustrate the torment of immigrants as they deal with the consequences and dangers of living between worlds. Amy Tan dwells on the issues that language creates for an average immigrant in the new land, w here he or she migrates to. Most of the times either they are unable to understand the mechanics of the new language or they cannot completely eschew the nuances of their original language and its cultural impacts. Tan, from her personal experience show that the people in America look down on immigrants, who are not capable of speaking the language as the natives do and hardly listen to them or assist them. Her mother, who speaks ââ¬Å"broken or fractured Englishâ⬠in the US, confronts a lot of problems because she cannot converse with the natives in a befitting style (Tan, p.2). Her stockbroker ignores her demands and delays sending her the check because she is not able to talk to him properly.

Analyze a Foreign Song Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Analyze a Foreign Song - Essay Example (ââ¬Å"Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna ââ¬â Part 8â⬠). ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠is a typical instance of popular Bollywood film music in contemporary times. It has a catchy, lighthearted tune, fuses Western and Indian styles of music and even has a few lines of English lyrics. E.g.: ââ¬Å"Love will find a wayâ⬠is part of the refrain verse. The time signature is a simple 4/4. There are three main singers: Shafqat Amanat Ali, Shankar Mahadevan and Carolisa. The texture is therefore a polyphonic one. The leading voice is a tenor. The orchestra and chorus are present throughout the song and contribute significantly to the song. The orchestra comprises instruments of both the Indian classical music tradition as well as the Western music tradition. For instance, the Indian Tabla and the electric guitar are both discernible in the refrain (ref. 1:47 of the song). The form of the song, like most mainstream Bollywood music, is strophic. The tune of the first stanza is repeated for later sta nzas; there is a common refrain as well. The device of counterpoint is also used at times, notably around 2:15 when the singer sings a taan, or a rapid progression of melodic notes. ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠is different from the typical Western popular song in several ways. The instruments it puts to use, like the Tabla and the Indian keyboard Harmonium, are not heard in mainstream pop music in America. If one were to compare it with something like Eminemââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Lose Yourselfâ⬠, the difference emerges right away. ââ¬Å"Lose Yourselfâ⬠is entirely a rap song with words that are spoken rather than sung to a repetitive percussion. Melody and harmony are not integral parts of a rap song. In ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠however, the orchestral music and melody of the songs are crucial to the song. ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠also has musical interludes and refrains that are very different from the refrain in ââ¬Å"Lose Yourselfâ⬠which is primarily rap. Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Times They Are A-Changinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ belongs firmly to the traditions of Folk and Country & Western music. Comparing it with ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠also reveals differences. Dylanââ¬â¢s song relies primarily on the content of his lyrics to carry it through. The song itself is sung simply with a minimalist acoustic guitar accompaniment. This is in stark contrast with ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠which uses an extravagant orchestra throughout. ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠can be contrasted against a Bluesy track like Creamââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Crossroadsâ⬠too. ââ¬Å"Crossroadsâ⬠has an eight-note riff in its rhythm section whereas ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠has a refrain that is dominated by the percussive sounds of the Tabla and the Interlude music. This song has several eclectic features. The uses of an orchestra ensemble, the fusion of Western and Indian music and the use of English words in the lyrics are all its defining features. In this it is similar to the Western tradition of the musical an d call-and-response urban gospel music. In both these styles there is the presence of a chorus, usually there is also an orchestra ensemble. The polyphonic texture and importance of melody are also common features. ââ¬Å"Mitwaâ⬠can be compared to a song like ââ¬Å"I Will Follow Himâ⬠from the Sister Act soundtrack which has a similar buildup. It starts out with just the vocals; then there is the introduction of the percussion and accompanying instruments and finally the climax with the entire chorus and orchestra. I liked the song because of its lilting tune that slowly builds up into a catchier beat. I
